Help Children and Refugees in Haiti
Chronic instability, brutal dictatorships and natural disasters in recent decades have left Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti, the poorest nation in the Americas. Nearly 60% of the population lives below the poverty line.
In recent days,ÌýHaitiÌýhas descended into a critical state of violence and chaos.ÌýMore than one million children are trappedÌýin areas controlled by armed groups.ÌýOur teams are working around the clock to support children and ensure they are protected from harm, exploitation and abuse.
In 2010, Haiti suffered a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake – a catastrophe that took hundreds of thousands of lives and destroyed much of its capital city, Port-au-Prince, and neighboring areas. Then in 2016, Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade, left 1.4 million Haitians in need of humanitarian assistance. Today, there are grave concerns for children once again following aÌý7.2-magnitude earthquake.
91²Ö¿â has been on the ground in Haiti all along – and we’ll continue to be there for Haiti’s most vulnerable children and families – thanks to supporters like you.

Gang Violence in Haiti: What to Know About the Escalating Violence
HaitiÌýhas descended into a critical state of violence and chaos. The situation escalated dramatically in the past few days, as gang groups now control about 90% of Port-au-Prince.Ìý
Children living in areas impacted by gang violence are also at risk of armed recruitment and sexual violence. Critical health and social services are teetering on the edge of collapse. Most health facilities are inaccessible due to the violence, leaving thousands of families and children without healthcare services.Ìý
"A record three million children urgently need humanitarian aid in Haiti this year, said Chantal Imbeault, 91²Ö¿â's Country Director in Haiti. "Yet, our staff and other aid agencies are struggling to distribute aid as the violence continues to escalate in parts of the country. This violence must come to an end, or children will continue to pay the heaviest price."
91²Ö¿â has a long history of responding to conflicts and natural disasters in Haiti.ÌýToday, amid challenging conditions,Ìý91²Ö¿â is working around the clock to support children who are trapped in a deadly cycle of violence, poverty and hunger.
We are providing cash so families can buy food and other essentials, and delivering health and nutrition support, including treating children for malnutrition and providing nutrition counselling to caregivers. We are also supporting children to access water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, to continue learning and ensuring they are protected from harm, exploitation and abuse.Ìý

Our Work for Children in Haiti
91²Ö¿â has been a leading charity for children in Haiti since 1978, providing a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm.
Our programs address the health and nutrition needs of mothers and children. We ensure children’s early childhood development and literacy. We reach children through school-based health and nutrition activities that enable them to stay healthy, well-nourished and attending school. We also address water, sanitation and hygiene needs. And we protect vulnerable children from harm.
When crisis strikes in Haiti, 91²Ö¿â is on the ground with the infrastructure, knowledge of the country, staff and global expertise to respond quickly and efficiently to meet the needs of the most vulnerable children and their families.
Here are some recent examples of our work:
A healthy start in life
- We’re training health care providers to safely assist mothers on the day of birth and beyond, including helping babies breathe, essential baby care and postnatal care for babies and mothers, as well as Kangaroo Mother Care for premature babies
- We’re implementing sexual and reproductive health programs to empower youth to take responsibility for their health, including education on preventing early pregnancyÌý Ìý
The opportunity to learn
- We’ve trained hundreds caregivers on at-home early learning strategies
- Our education programs are helping prepare little ones for schooling, restore schools, provide classroom materials, train teachers and support parent teacher associations
- We’re working with education systems to deliver basic health services and foster lifelong healthy hygiene habits
- We’re providing nutrition education and training teachers on nutrition education strategies

Protection from harm

Emergency response
- We are right now working around the clock to support children who are trapped in a deadly cycle of violence, poverty and hunger, as armed groups and gang violence rages in Haiti. - In response to the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck westernÌýHaitiÌýon August, 14, 2021, amid challenging conditions, 91²Ö¿â responded quickly to help children and families who have lost everything.Ìý
- After the 2010 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew in 2016, we were quick on the scene to save lives, provide families with urgently needed supplies, food and shelter materials
- We also helped to protect children from harm, restore their access to education and provide families with income opportunities
- We ran disaster risk reduction programs to help children and schools be better prepared for the impact of a disaster
